What Kehinde Talking About?

On the Naming and Shaming of Quvenzhanè Wallis

February 25, 2013

We’ve been here before, most recently in the case of Gabrielle Douglas and most often with First Lady Michelle Obama. And now, Quvenzhanè Wallis. Those extraordinary Black females must be identified as something other than women and girls. So they name them. They shame them. The methods are different but the intent is always the same. So that it is understood that when the rights of women are advocated, Black females are not included in that group. When the Violence Against Women Act is debat[...]

What Kehinde Talking About?

Reagan, Romney, Rhimes and Rap Music: America’s Obsession with Black Female Identities

November 9, 2012

Rewind. In 1976, Ronald Reagan did what many politicians do when giving anecdotal support of his/her platform—he made stuff up. She has eighty names, thirty addresses, twelve Social Security cards and is collecting veteran's benefits on four non-existing deceased husbands. And she is collecting Social Security on her cards. What Kehinde Talking About?

Michelle

October 31, 2012

She didn’t fit into any of the socially constructed identities previously created for women of color—no Jezebel, Mammy, Welfare Queen or Sapphire to be found on or near her person. The resulting confusion led to women of color holding their heads just a little bit higher. When little Brown and Bl[...]

When it comes to a peaceful aesthetic, one of these kids is doing the wrong thing. With acrylic storage, things that aren’t color coded can start to feel visually overwhelming. A room full of the bottom right corner can literally make some folks feel more stressed (it’s me, I’m folks). A bunch of the storage was starting to look like that because I buy too much shit. Anyway, a quick purge of products I’m not using and delegating anything that didn’t coordinate to hidden storage instantly made a difference (I wish I’d taken a pic before I started). It might seem hella extra to some folks but nothing is too extra for my peace of mind. Swipe for the update. What are some extra steps you take to keep your peace in your home? #homeorganization #homedecor #storage #bodybytph #acrylicstorage #beautyroom
